Product Details

Versatile, multi-purpose adhesive that can be used for total-etch or self-etch techniques. Bonds reliably to all surfaces without an additional primer.

Indicated for both direct and indirect restorations; bonds light cured composites and compomers to dentin and enamel. Can also be used for root surface desensitization, as a protective varnish for glass ionomer restoratives, or to seal dentin prior to amalgam restorations.

  • One-step, one-coat, 35-second application.
  • Consistent bond strength to both moist and dry etched dentin.
  • Virtually no post-op sensitivity, regardless of technique.
  • Effective on all surfaces; high bond strength to all indirect surfaces (zirconia, alumina, glass ceramics and metals) without a separate primer.
  • Excellent marginal integrity for highly esthetic restorations.
  • Choose from unit dose or flip top vial with unique nozzle design for dispensing control.
  • No refrigeration needed.

      Clinical Evaluations

      Company Logo
Scotchbond Universal Adhesive was evaluated by 31 consultants in 1,500 uses. This product received a 98% clinical rating.
      Description
Scotchbond Universal Adhesive is a single-component, light-curing adhesive that can be used in self-etch or total-etch procedures. It also contains MDP and silane, which allows it to prime metal, silica-based ceramic and zirconia restorations. Addition of the optional dual-cure activator allows it to be used with dual- or self-cured composite materials and cements. Scotchbond Universal Adhesive is ethanol- and water-based and bonds to moist or dry tooth surfaces. It is indicated for use in all direct and indirect bonding procedures, including composite fillings; core build-ups; cementation of crowns, bridges, inlays, onlays, and veneers.

      Product Features
Scotchbond Universal Adhesive is an outstanding adhesive, offering more versatility than consultants have seen in other products. The ability to treat multiple substrates with one product simplifies procedures and reduces the inventory necessary in the office. Having one product for self-etch and total etch applications was significant to many consultants. Being able to bond to moist or dry teeth reduces the technique sensitivity that exists with many adhesives. Scotchbond Universal Adhesive is viscous enough to coat the tooth without being runny and wets the tooth well. Dental assistants appreciated the one-handed operation of the flip cap and narrow dropper spout, but sealing of the cap to the bottle was not always secure.

58% of consultants reported that Scotchbond Universal Adhesive was better than their current adhesive, and 39% reported it was equivalent. 84% would switch to Scotchbond Universal Adhesive, and 94% would recommend it.

      Consultants'' Comments
      • “So many different uses in one bottle.”
      • “No post-operative sensitivity.”
      • “Now I can keep just one adhesive in the office for every procedure.”
      • “Simplifies bonding procedures.”
        “No refrigeration required.”
      • “Applicator brushes are large.”
      • “Adhesive is heavily tinted - I would prefer a clear material.”

      October 2012 www.dentaladvisor.com

      Company Logo
Scotchbond Universal earned 4.4 stars out of a possible 5.0.
      Strengths:
One component for virtually all uses regardless of whether you etch or not with phosphoric acid. Bottle or unidose. Bottle allows dispensing one drop at a time and one-handed operation. No problems seating indirect restorations. Easy to use – only one application is necessary. Ability to bond to zirconia as it contains MDP monomer, which facilitates chemical bonding. It also contains silane for adhesion to glass-ceramic surface.

      Weaknesses:
Ability to bond to self-cure composites is mediocre even when DCA is used. Directions are confusing in several sections.

      Bottom line:
Performs well in both the etch & rinse and self-etch modes with light-cured materials, but even though it comes with an activator, it did not work as well as we expected with our self-cured test composite.
